چکیده

We investigate the understanding of landmarks using a model of embedding procedures that sees affordances established on three levels. On the first level there are landmark experience and direct communication process as distinct affordance structures. On the second level the initial landmark experience has become part of the speech act thus establishing direct wayfinding communication. On the third level the communication situation of the speech act incorporating the landmark experience is changed into indirect communication thus transforming into a narrative. We apply the leveled model of narrative structure to human generated route directions. We demonstrate how the initial experience – the landmark – is incorporated into communication structures, how it turns into a narrative in order to secure understanding and how understanding is guided via narrative structures. With this approach from Literature we contribute to the problem of in-depth natural language understanding. Ultimately our interest is in automatic generation of route directions. We will show that simply referring to landmarks in route directions is not sufficient for successful communication.

Selection of Salient Features for Route Directions

People navigating in unfamiliar environments rely on wayfinding directions, either given by people familiar with the place, or given by maps or wayfinding services. The essential role of landmarks in human route communication is well-known. However, mapping the human ability to select landmarks ad hoc for route directions to a computational model was never tried before. Wayfinding services mana...

When and Why Are Visual Landmarks Used in Giving Directions?

Route directions describe the sequence of actions a moving person needs to take to reach a goal in an environment. When generating directions, speakers not only specify what to do. They also refer to landmarks located along the route. We report two studies intended to identify the cognitive functions of landmarks. In the first study, participants learned a route in an urban environment. They th...

7-140. nts perceive in Abstract. Route directions are instructions, primarily verbal, that explain how to get from one place to another. The current study examines several methods for assessing the quality of verbal route directions by characterizing them in terms of the number of elements (such as landmarks, segments or turns) and by subjective ratings of their goodness. Route directions for r...

A Uniform Handling of Different Landmark Types in Route Directions

Landmarks are crucial for human wayfinding. Their integration in wayfinding assistance systems is essential for generating cognitively ergonomic route directions. I present an approach to automatically determining references to different types of landmarks. This approach exploits the circular order of a decision point’s branches. It allows uniformly handling point landmarks as well as linear an...
